Paintings by George A. "Frolic" Weymouth on view April 29 to June 5
The public is invited to write comments in memory books at the museum. As a memorial contribution all admission proceeds for Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 will go to the Frolic Weymouth Endowment Fund.A selection of landscapes and portraits by noted artist George A. "Frolic" Weymouth (1936-2016) will be on view at the Brandywine River Museum of Art in a display organized in memory of the late artist. Beginning April 29, a selection of 15 works by Weymouth-a founder of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art and its long-time chairman-will be on view in a gallery adjacent to the one where the work of Andrew Wyeth, a friend and mentor of Weymouth in tempera painting, is displayed.
"Frolic had a remarkable eye," said Thomas Padon, director of the Brandywine Museum of Art. "Heir to the Brandywine school of artists, which he greatly admired, Weymouth worked in tempera and watercolor to create a highly personal panorama of the landscapes and people he knew." As a tribute to Weymouth, the museum has assembled some of the artist's beloved works. In 2018, Weymouth will be the subject of a major retrospective organized by the Brandywine, with noted scholar Joseph J. Rishel as guest curator.
Frolic Weymouth was a visionary conservationist, philanthropist, and accomplished sportsman. His tireless work for nearly fifty years helped the Conservancy grow from its initial forty-seven acres of preserved land to more than 62,000 today, and the Museum to amass a collection of 4,000 works of American art, in particular artists who have lived and worked in the Brandywine valley, most notably that of the Wyeth family of artists.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Frolic Weymouth Endowment Fund of the Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art.
The Brandywine River Museum of Art features an outstanding collection of American art housed in a 19th-century mill building with a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine. The museum is open daily (except Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day) from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is $15 for adults, $10 for seniors ages 65 and over, $6 for students and children ages 6; free for children 5 and younger and Brandywine Conservancy & Museum of Art members.
