Brandyine River Museum of Art Celebrates Women's History Month with Gallery Talks Focused on Female Artists

In honor of Women’s History Month, the Brandywine River Museum of Art will present “Her America: Three Women Artists from the Phillips Collection” on three consecutive Wednesdays in March at 11 a.m.

Presented by Associate Curator Amanda C. Burdan, each lecture will focus on one female artist whose work is on view in From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American Art. The exhibition is on view at the Museum from February 24 through May 21.

The featured artists are Georgia O’Keeffe (March 8), Doris Lee (March 15), and Grandma Moses (March 22).

The series cost for the three lectures is $35 (members, $25). The price for individual lectures is $15 (members, $10).

From Homer to Hopper: Experiment and Ingenuity in American Art reflects the rich diversity of style and expression in American art created between 1870 and 1950. The exhibition is assembled from the renowned holdings of The Phillips Collection in Washington, DC, and features 54 superb paintings by Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, Thomas Eakins, Marsden Hartley, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, Jacob Lawrence, Georgia O’Keeffe, Horace Pippin, Maurice Prendergast, John Sloan, and many others who revolutionized picture-making in the United States. The exhibition traces the course of modern art in the works of these artists—from the bold, investigative realism of Winslow Homer and Thomas Eakins at the end of the 19th century, to the reductive views and psychological insights of Edward Hopper and Morris Graves at mid-20th century. The exhibition is organized by The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC. It is made possible through the generosity of William and Laura Buck. Sponsorship has been received from Wilmington Trust. The Brandywine River Museum of Art features an outstanding collection of American art housed in a 19th-century mill building with a dramatic steel and glass addition overlooking the banks of the Brandywine.
