Virginia Rail

Virginia Rail

While doing a nighttime marsh bird survey recently on a property subject to a conservation easement, we were fortunate to locate several Virginia rails.

This normally secretive bird appeared just long enough to allow us to capture a few images with the camera.  More often heard rather than seen, this species is relatively common in our local wetlands. If you have a wetland approximately one acre or larger in size that contains sweet flag, tussock sedge, or cattails, you may also have these elusive and beautiful birds on your property.

If you are interested in learning more about how to manage your wetlands to attract these species, or if you'd like to have our staff survey your wetland for rails, please contact the Brandywine Conservancy at 610-388-2700.
