The four programs include:
Part 1: Andrew Wyeth’s Early Work, up to 1945
Offered as a live talk in January 2024
Take a deep dive into Andrew Wyeth's early work, focusing on the decade from 1935 to 1945, leading up to the death of his father, N.C. Wyeth. During these critical formative years, the artist painted still life arrangements in oil in his father’s studio, captured coastal Maine in colorful and loosely-painted watercolors, and experimented with the exacting medium of egg tempera. It was also during this time that Wyeth met Betsy James, who would become his wife and muse.
Part 2: Andrew Wyeth 1945 to 1965
Offered as a live talk in April 2024
Explore Andrew Wyeth’s career during an eventful two-decade period in which he painted some of his best-known works, including Christina’s World, Wind from the Sea, Brown Swiss and the self-portrait Trodden Weed and experienced the trauma of his father’s sudden death. As the artist developed his mature tempera technique, he continued exploring his immediate surroundings through an often-daily watercolor practice. Join Victoria as she shares both familiar and never-before-seen images from this fascinating period of Wyeth’s artistic development.
Part 3: Andrew Wyeth 1965 to 1985
Offered as a live talk in July 2024
Explore an eventful period of Andrew Wyeth’s career during which the artist was recognized for his achievements both nationally and internationally. Major exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, London and Toyko included the landmark Two Worlds of Andrew Wyeth: Kuerners and Olsons, the first solo exhibition by a living artist presented by the Metropolitan Museum of Art. This was also a time when Wyeth lost two important friends and models, Christina Olson and Karl Kuerner, and created (in secret) the majority of the work that would be considered The Helga Collection, featuring model Helga Testorf.
Part 4: Andrew Wyeth 1985 to 1999
Offered as a live talk in January 2025
Discover Andrew Wyeth’s life and career between 1985 and 1999, a prolific time for the artist marked by public acclaim and critical challenges. Major exhibitions of his work included American Vision: Three Generations of Wyeth Art which traveled to 5 international venues beginning at the Academy of the Arts of the USSR in Leningrad and Andrew Wyeth: The Helga Pictures which toured to 7 cities in the US. This was also a period of reflection for the artist as seen in his autobiographical masterwork, Snow Hill (1989). In 1990, Andrew and his wife, Betsy James Wyeth, purchased Benner Island off the coast of Maine. This became their primary summer home and along with nearby Allen Island, a source of inspiration for new work such as Two if by Sea (1995).
