State Symbol Series: Eastern Hemlock Tree
A major component of Pennsylvania's woods, the graceful Eastern Hemlock (Tsuga canadensis) is Pennsylvania's state tree and one that provides numerous ecological benefits from the shading of headwater trout streams to providing wildlife habitat. Sadly, these trees are threatened by the Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (Adelges tsugae), an invasive insect that feeds at the base of hemlock needles, causing needle drop and decline, and eventually killing the tree.
Sarah Johnson and Timothy Tomon with the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' Bureau of Forestry will discuss the natural history of these trees, the insect, and their work to survey and protect them. Recommendations on how you may protect HWA-infested trees will be shared.
