Go Wild with Petunias!

Go Wild with Petunias!

Are you looking for a native ground cover to use in your yard?

Hairy Wild Petunia (Ruellia humilis) is a perennial petunia that is native to several counties in Pennsylvania. It has rather adaptable growing conditions and tolerates full or partial sun, moist to dry conditions, and nearly any type of soil. The pale lavender flowers are funnel-shaped with flared lobes and provide pollen for a variety of bee species.  In addition, this wildflower provides a nectar source for two species of day-flying moths, the sphinx and hummingbird moths, and the caterpillar of the buckeye butterfly (Junonia coenia) feeds on the foliage. Try planting this species in place of other less eco-friendly ground covers such as english ivy, periwinkle (vinca) and pachysandra.  It is both aesthetically appealling and supports our native wildlife.
