Critical Vote Today on America Gives More Act
On this day in which a critical vote will be held in Congress regarding conservation easements and charitable giving nationwide, Sherri Evans-Stanton, director of the Brandywine Conservancy, sent this powerful letter to the Editor of the Philadelphia Inquirer:
“Nonprofit charities make a big difference across Philadelphia, our region and the country. As we enter the season of giving, Congress is poised to pass legislation that would allow charitable organizations like the Brandywine Conservancy to do even more for our community. The Brandywine Conservancy has permanently protected or facilitated the preservation of over 63,000 acres of critical natural, cultural, and agricultural resources in Southeastern Pennsylvania and Northern Delaware. Over 90% of these more than 450 conservation and agricultural easements have been donated by the land owner. These conserved lands help protect drinking water supplies, provide food locally and make the region uniquely rich in historic resources. We strongly support this legislation.
The America Gives More Act, a bill with robust bipartisan support, is on the verge of passage. If enacted, it would unleash a virtual tidal wave of charitable giving—increasing donations of food to food banks, allowing tax-free contributions from IRAs, and encouraging land conservation by farmers, ranchers, and other middle-income landowners. By increasing financial incentives for donations, this legislation provides certainty to donors and charities, allows charities and foundations to fulfill their missions, build stronger and more vibrant communities locally and across America, and help those in need.
We urge Senators Casey and Toomey of Pennsylvania and Senators Carper and Coons of Delaware to support the America Gives More Act, thereby increasing the ability of charities to advance the public good.”
The Brandywine Conservancy will provide updates as we receive them and encourage you, our passionate supporters, to share your feelings on this vital piece of legislation with your congressperson today.
